Train Derailment – BHP Port Hedland
On Nov 5th, 2018, a BHP Billiton train carrying 268 wagons full of iron ore derailed near Turner Siding, Western Australia. Cleanup and repair operations were expected to take one week to complete. A competitor of BHP contacted RS Metrics to provide a quote for satellite services to monitor the impact to iron ore stockpiles at the port and verify the status of repair operations at the accident site.
RS Metrics generated an immediate feasibility and project proposal evaluating all available satellite, aerial, and drone platforms. RS Metrics partnered with Planet, who was able to task high resolution satellites (SkySats) to provide the twice daily imagery required for analysis. RS Metrics delivered near daily updates over the next 14 days which provided the client with stockpile measurements and verification of the resumption of train operations. The client was able to better anticipate iron ore market impact and demand as a direct result of the project.
